Pit 102: Level 1
Completed on June 30, 2018, by Jocelyn and DC Locke, Odess and David Brinkman. This was a multievent day at Granby. The Granby museum was opened for the first official book signing of "Miracles to Yesterday." The day was also a birthday party for David and a 40th Irmo High School class reunion for David, Brad Everhart, Lindsey Smith, Don Smigelski, and Don Brandon. History friend (and Granby digger) Tim Bradshaw provided the video/photography. After the signing and lunch, we begin level 1 of pit 102. Near the road, we were once again overwhelmed with many modern-day brick and asphalt pieces in the first level. Mixed with these were a good number of Granby period artifacts. In this area, it is not unusual to see this as the road construction probably pushed these up into the yard, thus giving us two layers of Granby artifacts. The most exciting item of level one, however, was not Granby but still historic: an early 1890s shotgun shell. In a previous pit, we found one of these from the 1880s. This 1890s brass one still had some of the paper casing attached.
Pit 102: Level 1 produced: Granby period: Three stoneware, eight kitchen pottery, seven kitchen glass, 12 imported English window glass, one nail. Historic shotgun shell (1890s.) One 1960s plastic ring.
