Pit 107: Level 1

Completed on May 22, 2020, by Art Coogler, DC Locke, Kyle Markey, and Odess and David Brinkman. Kyle Markey, a new neighbor, joined us for the first time. Kyle wants to check his yard for artifacts and, of course, we wanted to help encourage that and offer assistance. This was our first dig in over a year, so we took on a slower pace. As expected, we recovered a lot of 1960s asphalt, concrete, and brick. We also recovered obvious Granby brick pieces, nails, pottery, and glass. Art found a large iron piece that we initially assumed to be a 1960s topless/bottomless can (container) but, after cleaning, the appearance (mostly the color and texture of the rusted iron) looked exactly like the recovered Granby nails. The overall shape of the object (before being somewhat flattened), was round with a 5.5-inch circumference. The top (as seen in the following picture) was rounded inward. I believe the bottom was done the same way, but the flattening of the object undid the rounding of the bottom. It would have stood about one inch in height before being flattened. This will be an interesting item to store away in our brains for a future date when historical documentation may reveal its true identity. It reminds me of the great lock tumbler find we made in Pit 37 (more information on that at this link).

After leveling off level one, Odess ordered pizza for us from Orlando. Odess monitored the dig from Orlando through a live video feed. DC's family arrived at noon and we enjoyed a good lunch and I signed a few copies of my new book Crossverse.

Pit 107: Level 1 produced: Granby period: one kitchen pottery, one kitchen glass, four window glass, two square nails, and one large mystery iron piece.
