Pit 140: Level 3

Completed on Feb 12, 2022 by Sue and Bill Sexton, Alma Robichaud, Odess and David Brinkman. iThings picked up in a big way in level three with many pottery and pipe pieces and a small musket shot. A lot of small Native American pottery pieces were found and one piece of chert. The big find came at the bottom of the pit where we found our second wood post surrounded by 30 nails and large brick pieces. This find gave us a line of posts (wood and archaeological post hole features) that were part of a front porch that faced the Congaree river. Other data (the artifacts of area pits) show that this was the porch of a 16' X 16' separate kitchen building. It looks like (from window glass fragments) that the kitchen had two windows. Also found within the area of this porch were the largest animal bones found in our dig. Although Pit 140 started off really slow, the last few inches of artifacts put it into the top-twenty of the Granby digs best pits. You can view a video of the post excavation at this link.
