Pit 70: Level 1
Completed September 14, 2014 by David and Odess Brinkman, Dean Hunt, Teresa Mitchell, and Steven Rougeau. Perfect day for digging. Sunny with a high of only 70 and low humidity. We moved back over to the row on the Brookcliff Drive fence expecting just average artifacts numbers. Odess and David got things started and were mostly just working to get through the grass and asphalt in the first half of level 1. Teresa, Steven, and Dean soon arrived and we found a few pieces of pottery and some old window glass. Odess had the big find of the level with a 1750-1800 pipe stem. This newer pipe stem, coming in the first level, goes right along with the pattern we are seeing of date and depth. Even though this land had been plowed many times since the time of Granby, the older pipe stems are still found deeper. Artifact totals for level 1 were as expected based on the results of the adjacent pit #21.
Pit 70: Level 1 produced: 7 pieces of pottery, 14 pieces of glass, 4 nails, 4 Native American pieces, 25 pieces of charcoal, and a 1750-1800 pipe stem.
