Film footage of the damaged USS Logan at Iwo Jima
David Brinkman - I found this film footage in the National Archives in 2004. The Logan traveled side-by-side with the Lowndes on many occasions during WWII.
The Logan, Lowndes, and Bayfield were together at Iwo Jima. The Logan rammed the USS NAPA at Iwo Jima and this footage shows the damage to the Logan.
Below is the account from the NAPA:
Returning again on the morning of the 21st, she was rammed by Logan (APA-196) at about 0445. The resulting hole in her hull, frames 98-102, was 15 feet long and extended down to a point 10 feet beyond the turn of the bilge. Fast action on the part of the crew and even among the evacuees; limited flooding to No. 4 hold, and prevented ary fires from breaking out in that hold which contained high octane gas.
After assuring the water-tightness of the remaining holds the "Victory" ship resumed her duties, remaining in the Iwo Jima area until the 24th. She then departed for Guam where repairs were started.

"Most treasured moments of my
life were aboard old APA154. Vivid memories include the slow trek from
Pearl to Florida Island where we dropped off 3000 buckets on the beach,
the day we crossed the International Date Line, the day we diverted
5 gallons of shrimp from officers mess to CPO locker and invited
Capt. Perdue to our shrimp fest at 0230 underway to Saipan. A great
moment we all remember for sure was being downwind of the USS Logan
in Saipan Harbor after she had been rammed and all the food had spoiled.
