How the War was Won
Warren Proctor
On my first trip into the beach at Iwo
Jima my boat was an LCMs #1. It
was a large craft powered by 2 grey marine motors, each with 250
horsepower on separate clutches. The well was 12 feet wide and 22 feet
long. The ramp weighed 2000 Ibs. There were 2 mounts for 50 caliber
machine guns. The wheel house had 1/4" steel on 2 sides and the back was
4' high for protection. On the first trip to the beach an ensign was in the
wheel house with me. My crew consisted of 2 bowmen and a motor mac.
My cargo was a truck and a 105 gun, plus the crew for them. We hit the
beach 6 minutes after the first wave. The beach was deep and the waves
high. It was hard to keep from broaching when I lowered the ramp onto the
beach. It was near a marine who had stepped on a land mine. The bowmen
pulled him into the boat and I backed out of there. His foot and leg almost
up to his knee was shredded. We gave him a shot of morphine and ran him
  to a hospital ship.

 "Aloha!" Sitting here across
the street from the spot on Pokai Bay where we held the luncheon
last year and enjoying reading the Lowndes news letter. Sony, Margaret and I
  won't be able to
make Washington, DC this year. Margaret has rented an RV for two weeks. We are
  flying to
Vancouver, BC on 10 July and will be traveling with her daughter and a couple
  of friends to
Detroit. The RV will be turned in on the East coast. We will spend time with
  Margaret's children
and grandchildren. Margaret and I will be returning via Denver after visiting
  my relatives there. I
called Max Cole after reading the news letter to see if he was going on the
  QE2 again. Sending
in a check for dues. Thanks for the good news letter.
"What you learn after you know it all counts."
Leo P. O'Brien
Margaret and I visited the Iwo Jima Memorial
in Connecticut recently and we found it very
moving. They did an excellent job. If anyone is going through this area, it
  would be well worth
visiting. We plan on arriving in Washington on Wednesday and staying through
  Monday night.
Also would like to arrange for three additional people for the banquet.
Note: That stress diet you sent me Leo, under
  the circumstances, is appropriate for
making arrangements for our 11th reunion and HI certainly take it into consideration.
  Thanks.

  Patricia Macpherson
Joan informed us that Don passed away
on June 12, 1999 just 12 days before his eightieth
birthday. No other information available. As a football player at UCLA he had
  the privilege of
appearing in the movie "Knute Rockne - All American" along with future
  United States
president Ronald Reagan and movie star Pat O'Brien. In early 1943 he survived
  the sinking of
the cruiser U.S.S. Chicago during the battle of Guadalcanal. He and George Tuppan
  acted as
hosts for the sixth U.S.S. Lowndes reunion in San Diego, California.
 The following directions
  have been forwarded
  from the reunion co-ordinator.
 Those flying into Reagon International
they would need to take the Subway
(Metro) to the Vienna Station. There will be a complimentary shuttle (Comfort
Inn's) that runs from this stop to the hotel.
For those coming in via Washington
Dulles, they would need to catch the
Washington Flyer ($8.00) which will take them to the Vienna Station
  where they
will pick up the complimentary shuttle (Comfort Inn's) to the hotel.
General directions for those who are driving,
pick up 495 when they have entered
the Washington area, take 495 to 66 West. Follow 66 west
  to Exit 57A - (Route50-
Fairfax). At second light, take a left onto Jermantown Road. The
  Comfort Inn is
immediately on your right (behind the Nation's Bank off Route 50 and Jermantown
  Road).

This & That
The Washington Monument is 555' 5-1/8"
high. The tallest masonry structure in the
world, made from Maryland marble. At the present time it is encased in a scaffold
consisting of aluminum and is in the process of restoration at a cost of $9.4
  million and
is scheduled to be complrted July 4, 2000. Doubt if it will be open for tours
  during our
stay in the Washington, DC area.
A little known/act is that North Americans
spend about 62,000 years a week in their
cars. It has also been noted that 20% of Americans are conceived in automobiles.
Dress code as it was in Honolulu will
be informal. However, no shorts, t- shirts, cut-
offs will be allowed at Hogates restaurant for our banquet, Clark Martin also
  suggests
that shoes be worn. I know, this may be a little tough for some of our shipmates,
  but
we'll try to have a few'grains of sand provided, just in case.
 It has been suggested that
the Washington Dulles airport is the most feasible one to
book into the Washington, D.C. area.
A reminder for those who have misplaced or failed to read the previous news letter:
A commitment has been made to the independent
reunion co-ordinator to come up with a
deposit, so please bear in mind that I (Bud) need to have payment by August
  1st.
 Several singles have indicated sharing
rooms to hold the cost down. Information for
Chuck Munson, E. Max Cole and Leon Fougnies - three to a room is okay.
Sally Gary
This is a reminder to all who have received
their raffle tickets, please return stubs and
payments to me by September 10th. This will give me ample time to make the necessary
documentation before the reunion. Let's try to make Sally's job as CEO of the
  Lowndes
Lovelies a little easier. She has devoted much time and effort to this cause,
Note: I'm sure I can speak for the
Reunion Group members in saying that her efforts
are appreciated. Thank you Sally, you're a good kid.
