USS LOWNDES
A P A 154
The "2nd ANNUAL USS LOWNDES REUNION" is scheduled for September 21, 22 &23,
1990 in Duluth, MN at the Radisson Hotel ( Downtown Duluth). Registration cards are
enclosed. Dates were omitted in first news letter - sorry about that. Registration fee
of $30 per person will include banquet on Saturday evening and a Sunday Brunch.
Please send fee to Dick Jones - 1442 89th Ave. W. - Duluth, MN - 55808 by Sept. 1.
Our airline for the reunion is Northwest Airlines and the identification code is 03006.
Give this number to your travel agency or Northwest ticket counter. The phone
number is 1-800-328-1111, daily between 7;OOAM and 10:30PM central time. You will
be entitled to 40% discount on Full Coach and 5% on Super Saver.
For those who are travelling by R.V, or with trailers, there are two excellent camp-
grounds, "Spirit Mountain" at Exit 249 on 135, "Indian Point" at 75th Avenue West and
Grand Avenue nestled on the shore of the St. Louis River. Both are ten minutes from
downtown. The hotel offers limited R.V. parking on the upper level.
There is shopping near the hotel. A tour is available on Saturday morning which will
include a harbor cruise, skyline tour and other points of interest.
You will be there about the time the leaves change and the colors are beautiful. Bring
one warm outfit as the temperature can change fast. Last year on September 21, 22,
& 23, it was in the 70 degree range. On the other hand it can go down to the 40 or 50
degree range. YouĞII love it!
We are still looking for some energetic
  crew
members to come forward to handle our "3rd
ANNUAL USS LOWNDES REUNION" in 1991.
Preferably in June which seems 1.0 be the most
  popular time frame.

Correction: Mitchell Chasteen, not Robbie,
who travelled the shortest distance to the
reunion in St. Louis.
Finger nails grow faster than toe nails.
USS Lowndes official ambassadors of good will, Dick and Bunnie Jones. On their trip
to the Southwest USA they visited with Billy Piercy and Glen Forgay in Texas, Harry
and Lupe Contreras in Arizona. Also talked to Hubert Ravenscraft who is in:
Let him know we are pulling
for him.
Western Missouri Medical Center
Burkarth Road
Warrensburg, MO 64093
816-747-3181 or 2500 Ext. 1732
Bunnie spent some time in the hospital in Arizona but is on the road to being normal
again. Happy to hear.
On Friday May llth Walt Karson (Elk River, MN)visited with me (Bud) and we had
quite a chat about old times, brought him up to date on the reunion in St. Louis. He
informed me that I was the first crew member he had seen since he left the Lowndes.
He will make the reunion in Duluth. Seems like these people from Minnesota sure do
get around.
Shouldn't have any problems in Duluth, a temperature of 125 degrees below zero
is required to freeze alcohol.
Dave Frederick visited his daughter in New Zealand for Christmas. Nice trip?

Jean and I did a bit of travelling out
on the west coast last July and this past February
celebrating our anniversary at the Hotel Del Coronado, compliments of our son.
  Did
visit some of the old haunts, San Diego Training Center, Camp Pendleton (Marines)
San Luis Obispo (Army). All stations where the Beach Party trained and practiced
beach landings. For the benefit of the BP
here is a little reminder of what Morro Bay
looks like, after all we did spend a night or
two there in foxholes. It hasn't changed a bit.
Clark Martin has attempted to secure memorabilia
from the Lowndes but has been
unsuccessful in finding any. " Spent the morning climbing about the 'Old
  Rust Buckets'
of the James River Reserve Fleet"* Thanks Clark for your efforts. By the
  way Clark
and Otto Walker arc members of the "Pearl Harbor Survivors Association",
  which
  will have a 50th Reunion December 7, 1991.
Howard Chappell mentioned that maybe we
can have a golf outing at one of our future
reunions. But I wonder how many of us suffer from the malady: "When I put
  the ball
where I can see it, I can't hit it - when I put the ball where I can hit it
  I can't see it".
  Any suggestions?
Lest we forget. Dan Wisdom has sent video
  tapes
of the St. Louis reunion to many, many crew
members and we do owe him a great big..

Thank You!.
He is still in there pitching, trying
to garner more information about the Lowndes,
  and locating more crew members.
Did you know that you can be arrested
for burning leaves in your back yard, but
can burn the American flag and get away with it? Darwkcab Society! Not for me.

Big day coming up for John Cary in September
'90, He's retiring. Our sympathy to
  Sally.
Congratulations to the Leo Winters on their 51st wedding anniversary Oct. 1989,

bed mad, of course, one year we were up
  for three months.
Condolences to Bill Lawrence and Otto Walker on the loss of their wives.

May 17th - Just heard from Dan Wisdom
regarding the following items of interest.
Our good will ambassadors also visited
  with
Dan and "Big H" Hodgson in Texas.
Also that Clark Martin made a second trip to
the "Old Rust Buckets" which proved fruitful.
He managed to scrounge up some brass name
plates, such as: Captain's Cabin, CPO Quarters,
  Ward Room, etc.
Diets are for people who are thick & tired of it.
