Pit 122: Level 3
Completed on April 10, 2021 by Kim Masters, Stephany North, Jocelyn and DC Locke, Odess and David Brinkman. Level three continued to produce wood charcoal pieces and also the water stain feature. At our normal maximum depth of 50cm, the burned post feature was still strong, so we followed it all the way to 70cm. Just below this feature, we found a piece of lead slag. This gives evidence that humans were behind the installing of the post (and that it was not a tree.) Overall, the artifacts found in pits 121 and 122 match almost exactly with the published artifacts for a "Carolina Slave quarters" site. We will continue to dig in this area to find the span of the buildings.
Pit 122: Level 3 produced: Continuation of multiple features (wood building and hard dirt floor.) One lead slag under the post feature at 70cm (a picture of this is on the level one page.
