Pit 73: Level 3
Completed on November 9, 2014 by Jeff Fouste, David and Odess Brinkman, DC Locke, Dean Hunt, and Teresa Mitchell. Level 3 turned out to be almost just like levels 1 and 2. Maybe the first time we have seen similar numbers through all 3 levels. The one difference was a big one. DC found 3 pipe stems in the level giving us a total of 4 pipe stems for the pipe. For the first time, our total count of pipe stems (74) exceeds the total number of pits (73). Almost 80% of our pipe stems are from the period before Granby. This must have been a busy place through almost all of the 18th century. In total, pit 73 was a little below average with: 34 pieces of pottery, 48 pieces of glass, 19 nails, 5 Native American pieces, 3 pipe bowl pieces, and 4 pipe stems. DC brought one of his Colonial period rifles and he closed the dig day by demonstrating its operation. We looked closely at the gun to see if we could identify a possible gun part found in pit 72.
Pit 73: Level 3 produced: 11 pieces of pottery, 19 pieces of glass, 11 nails, 4 Native American pieces, and 3 pipe stems (1720-1750).
