Sarah Friday's 1810 Granby Drawing

Mean's Store

John Means, like his neighbor Lewis Pou, took part in civic duties of the Granby community. He was an election/voting manager with Alexander Bell and Jacob Geiger in Granby between 1810 and 1812. He also was on a committee to nominate South Carolina College trustees in the first years of the college. Means left Granby in 1812, and he became an election/voting manager in Spartanburg County after moving. The 1800 census showed Means had nine slaves. An 1813 newspaper ad shows one of these as a “Run-away."
