"Artifacts
included a square nail fragment and a ball clay pipe fragment. While these are not very temporally sensitive items, their date ranges overlap the
time period that Fort Congaree II was used. In addition, one medium sand tempered undecorated
prehistoric sherd was recovered. The soil profile in these shovel tests indicated that the tests
were excavated into utility trenches. The top 10 centimeters consisted of humus, followed by a
yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy loam to the depth of between 70 and 75 centimeters. A light
brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silty loam reached to 100 centimeters."
