Pit 113: Level 3

Completed December 19, 2020 by Sean Fouste, Adriana Fouste, Jocelyn and DC Locke, Odess and David Brinkman. Level three produced smaller numbers of Granby artifacts compared to level three of the previous pit, but it gave us a good number of older items (Native American pottery, 1720-1750 pipe stems, and a musket shot.) As before, we found a lot of charcoal pieces but not as many as in level two of the previous pit. The total charcoal for all levels, however, was similar for the two pits. Leveling things off at 50 to 60 cms, we found the trench feature had gotten smaller, thus proving it is a V-shaped trench. Another feature appeared at 50 cm on the west (undisturbed) side of the pit. As we worked this down, it appeared to be a post hole. Once again, we took the east side of the pit down deeper than normal (about 80cm instead of 50cm) until we stopped finding artifacts. This is, again, a sign that artifacts fell deeper into the trench when it was dug in the 1960s.

Pit 113: Level 3 produced: 16 pieces of pottery, 14 glass, six nails, two pipe stems, one pipe bowl, .19 cal musket shot, eight Native American pottery and three tools, and two iron.
