Pit 115: Level 2

Completed on January 6, 2021, by Sarah, Bernalyn, and Dan Phillips, and Odess Brinkman. As we dig down to level 2, some obstacles got in the way, the roots from the magnolia tree! Thankfully, we have a pick tool, and Bernalyn seems so used to it that it didn't take much of a maneuver to untangle and uproot the magnolia roots. As soon as the dirt was cleared from roots, came out a huge piece of an artifact, a stoneware (see photo). This level brought about quite a bit of items, the usual window, and kitchen glasses, kitchen ceramics, slate, Native American pottery, burned and glazed bricks, iron and nails, asphalt, and charcoal. The most interesting item among the iron finds was this 5 & 3/4" iron that looks like a wooden gate hinge found by Bernalyn (see photo).

Pit 115: Level 2 produced:: 13 pieces of pottery, 18 glass, one slate, 13 Native American pottery, and six iron including a large latch/lock-like piece.

Below is the glazed brick. The glaze is very obvious. This glaze can happen to bricks that are very close to the heat source of the kiln. After this find, we may need to re-think the theory that these hard grey bricks are from the fire-place of the building. Maybe it was their kiln creation that gave them this characteristic.
